Serve

In Unitarian Universalism, we find wisdom in many of the world's sacred texts. Serving is an important tenet in several religions as well as in myriad cultures all over the planet. One such source of inspiration for serving comes from a Passover Haggadah which is the special story/script used for the Passover meal to honor the exodus of the Jews from the slavery in Egypt. There are many different versions of the haggadah that have been written over the years. Candles are lit as light turns to darkness.

These words appear in the UU hymnal 'Singing the Living Tradition.'

'May the light we now kindle
inspire us to use our powers,
to heal and not to harm,
to help and not to hinder,
to bless and not to curse,
to serve you, Spirit of freedom.
